Active, Dormant and Mud Volcanoes in Andaman and Nicobar Islands


 

Out of many fascinating places in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Volcanoes are one of the top tourist attractions. Volcanoes of Andaman give a unique edge for tourist. Beyond the sparkling waters, sun kissed beaches and inviting shores, these islands are also home of some unique volcanoes in all of South Asia.

The only active volcano present in the whole of South Asia is located in the Barren Island

Similarly, Mud volcanoes of Baratang are the sole mud volcanic formations found in India.

The volcanoes found in these Islands are:-

1) Active volcano - Barren Island

2) Dormant volcano - Narcondom Island

3) Mud volcanoes - Baratang and Diglipur

Active Volcano in Barren Island

The Barren Island as the name suggests, has hardly any vegetation or humans, except for some few bats, birds and rodents that can survive it's harsh climatic conditions. Along a chain of volcanoes from Sumatra to Myanmar this is the only active volcano, the last eruption recorded was on 23rd January 2017,as spotted by National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, followed by most recent one on November 2022.

The Island is remote in location and is reachable only by boat, after one needs special permit for visit, nevertheless the waters around barren islands are considered as one of the best scuba diving destinations around the world. 

Dormant Volcano in Narcondom Island

Among Andaman's volcanic clustur, the Narcondom Island's dormant Volcano is a lesser known gem. The island is rich in biodiversity and is home to an endemic species the Narcondom Hornbill, a species not found anywhere else. 

The majestic flying fox and sikkim rat are some other native mammals of the island. The name is believed to be derived from the tamil word 'naraka-kundram' meaning a 'pit of hell'. This island is also a wildlife sanctuary and a protected reserve.

The marine fauna around this island is highly impressive, making it a delightful experience for scuba divers to explore. This island is located 140 km from Diglipur.

Mud Volcanoes in Baratang and Diglipur

The Baratang mud volcano is one of the most frequently visited place by tourists. Mud volcanoes offer a captivating phenomenon of hot mud, gases, slurry and water eruption from the ground forming a dome like mud structure. 

Though mud volcanoes does not offer a traditional thrill associated with fiery counterparts, yet provide a serene sight to behold.
